Mattupetty dam is located in Munnar near Anmudi hill. It is surrounded with lush green tea plantation and rolling hills. Mattupetty dam is flanked with Shola forest for trekking, evening walk and mountain hiking.

Mattupetty, a pristine hill station, nestled at a height of 1700 m near Anmudi peak at 3 km distance from Munnar. It is situated in western ghats and surrounded with dense forest, charming hills, and verdant tea plantations.

Mattupetty dam is located near the streams of Muthirappuzha river, Chanduvarai river and Kundale river in Munnar.

Mattupetty dam (Madupetty Dam) is a scenic picnic spot and hill station. It is one of the scintillating attraction of Munnar situated in Idukki District, Kerala. Mattupetty dam was constructed in Pallivasal Hydro-electric project in 1940s.

The Mattupetty dam is flanked by tea gardens and woods. The reflection of tea garden in water provides a mesmerizing view of natural glamour of greenery. You can enjoy the trekking in forest and witness numerous elephants drinking water near dam.

The Mattupetty lake is just few miles away from Mattupetty Dam. The lake is near Shola forest and hilly woods. It is a rather a small lake but with eye-popping landscape. You can go for trekking, a woods walk and hiking in nearby Shola woods. Mattupetty lake is bouquet filled with peace , tranquility and serene elegance of natures’ bloom.

The still water of dam , the nearby tea gardens, water sports , scenic landmark and immersive experience make the Mattupetty and Ideal tourist destination in Munnar.

You can go for Echo point which is just 6 km away from Mattupetty dam. The greenery of land, glittering rays of sun and enchanting terrain takes your breath away and you would resist to leave the place.

Boating in Mattupetty Dam

Mattupetty dam is few kms away from Munnar. The sight provides the glamouring view of serene water, shining rays and reflection of nearby tea garden in water making it a visual treat for eyes. The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC), Idukki provides different type of water activities and boating in Mattupetty dam which is an experience worth witnessing. You can experience the speed boating, pedal boating and rowing boating here. You can also perceive the captivating view of falling water from dam, presence of numerous elephants and vast species of birds and animals while taking the boat ride.

Type of boating, Fee and duration in Mattupetty Dam

The DTPC provides different types of boating for family, individual and adventure lovers. The boat point for Mattupetty dam is located a bit far from Dam View point. It is suggested to go for early morning as during afternoon it is crowded.
You can experience the bewitching and mystique presence of nature in its full bloom. One should reach early here as sometime the waiting time can be up to 2-3 hours. After reaching the boat club, You have to take the parking and entrance ticket.

There are three different option for boating.

  1. Speed Boating:- It has a capacity for 5 people and facility is available from 10 am to 4 pm with the cost of 750 for 5 people. You can enjoy this thrilling and stimulating ride for 15 minutes. Life jackets are provided for security. The driver will stop the boat for two to three times at scenic and captivating views point for you to take pictures.
  2. Family Boat:- It has the capacity for up to 20 people. Time during could be between 15 min to 30 min. Prices are different for kids and adults or ordinary boat:- It costs 300 INR for 1 to 5 people for 15 min.
  3. Traditional boat:- It has the capacity to carry up to 40 people. It is good for people who like to mingle with new people. It will cost 120 INR for each person. Ride duration will be 30 min.

  4. Paddle boating:- It is currently not available.

Best Time to Visit Mattupetty

Mattupetty lake is surrounded with hills and and lake forms a giant island in between. It is situated in Munnar, Idukki District.

The best time to visit Mattupetty is between September to May. During this time , the weather will be full of water and tea garden will provide enthralling scenery . There is rainy season (Monsoon) in June and August in Munnar so place is difficult to reach and boating is not allowed during the rainy season.

How to Reach Mattupetty Dam

The nearest town is Munnar and the Angamaly Railway Station is 109 km away from Munnar. One can reach from Cochin International Airport as well which is 108 km away from Munnar. You can take Taxi, Car, Tuktuk or Buses to reach the destination.
